Alicia Mack- Evaluation Question 1

Q1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of film openings)

Title of the film- ‘broken beauty’ we thought that our title related to our story as well as hints to the fact that our movie is a thriller, the typography is cracked to connote to the title and theme of our thriller.

Setting/location- we were limited to keeping our location on school site, but this worked in our favour as our story was focused on her being stalked at school, also the school had the facilities which we needed onsite which may have been difficult to get permission to film in off-site i.e. dance studio and darkroom.

Our choice of location uses typical conventions of thrillers; the stalker developing pictures in a darkroom, our main character dancing in a studio.

Costumes/props- the sartorial codes that we implemented also challenge typical conventions of complex female characters in thrillers, usually show these characters are shown as obsessive and delusional (image 2), we decided to show our main character as a shadow of former herself (image 1) which is not always typically shown.

We also depict our character as the popular girl (image 3), which shows the audience her fall from grace as the audience see her at her worst at the beginning of our thriller.

Camerawork/editing- we used typical editing techniques such as dissolves to show the link between scenes these are typical of the thriller genre. We used the crane to create an over the shoulder shot to create a questionable atmosphere with our stalker developing pictures of our main character.

Sartorial codes

This is our first look, it shows our main character when she has been admitted to psychiatric hospital; her make-up reflects how she feels inside which is deranged and not able to distinguish between reality and fantasy;she is like a shadow of her former self (shown below).

This is our second look, when our character is in the dance studio she will look vulnerable yet seductive as this reflects her personality which is confident and powerful, her dance outfit shows the audience that she is professional; the show of skin also makes her seem more vulnerable due to the fact the audience know she is being stalked.

Sample shots

these are sample shots for shooting scene three, these shots impy stalking i.e. the reflection in the window shows someone taking a photo of someone but them not knowing imply she is being stalked, the images through branches, behind trees and through windows gicve an idea of how we can film the shots to imply to the audience that someone is following our main character

These shots show how will position our character to show the audince she has lost her mind, the white walls behind her make her look vulnerbale and alone.

Test shot

This is a demonstration of a tracking shot in which we have used equipments such as tracking wheels and tracking pipes to achieve a smooth movement of the camera. We are planning to apply this technique in our opening sequence in which we will show the character is being followed.

Location shots

Dance studio-shows the location that we plan to shoot scene one, this location is ideal as it has the space for our character to dance , also the the mirrors add to the movement of the character; the lights also allow the room to be lit so we can film.

Drama hall- shows a possible location for scene one as it has lighting that we can adjust to create a different atmosphere, unlike the space which only has digetic lighting.

Science corridor- the white walls and bright lighting create a sense of tension and the idea of of a pyscho ward, the room has white walls which make the room seem empty causing a feeling of isolation.

Darkroom- shows location of the area where our stalker develops the pictures of our main character, it shows the lenght the stalker will go in his obsession by having his own darkroom to develop the images he has taken.

These images show the area where the sudience see the stalker behind our main characte, the open space will make it look as she is alone and create an atmosphere of isolation.
